El Chipirón

Hidden in the mixed-use Cielo development on South Lamar, this sleek, airy locale offers a glimpse into the ultra-modern side of Spain. While sampling the exotic gin and tonic menu, we tried several classic shareable pinchos (think tapas) displayed along the bar; our favorites included the garlicky, toasty pan con tomate and the generous portion of nutty Spanish ham with ripe melon. The empanadillas de verduras arrived as warm pillows of fried dough wrapping a savory mixture of sautéed onions, red peppers, and mushrooms. We nibbled salty blistered green padrón peppers and mushrooms while awaiting our entrée, Spanish-style rice in a saffron broth with tender shrimp (similar to paella, which is also served, but only on Tuesdays).
