The tall cypress branches overhead evoke a theater-box vista of the River Walk, the best possible way to enjoy it. Inside, the cozy rooms of the historic Dashiell House are equally charming, should the weather not cooperate. Combined with a stellar wine list, a classically oriented menu—think beef Wellington, crème brûlée, escargots—and the skill of the kitchen under young French chef Laurent Rea, the Fig Tree deserves its special-occasion reputation. With a centerpiece of perfectly grilled and generously portioned Scottish salmon and béarnaise-sauced asparagus, our meal was en pointe. However, our waiter was not quite up to the kitchen’s standards (a lackluster mien and unschooled on the menu).
