Funky Art Cafe
Dotted among the rolling hills and green pastures of the Brenham area are a surprising number of chic eateries. Among these spots is the Funky Art Cafe, on Brenham’s courthouse square. Sharing space with a coffee bar and a kitchen shop in a historic building, the brightly decorated, casual spot feels like a tearoom for hipsters. Menu choices range from a traditional chicken salad with fruit to a chicken pot pie topped with curried sweet potatoes. We were intrigued by one of the many vegetarian options, the New Mexican pumpkin burger: far from the sweet, cinnamony taste of, say, a pumpkin-spiced latte, this hearty patty was chock-full of wild rice, corn, cilantro, and jack cheese, with a little jalapeño sprinkled in for a spicy kick. Another interesting twist on a hearty staple was a meat loaf blended with bacon, mushrooms, and Swiss cheese.
