The kind of restaurant its Junius Heights neighbors would rather walk to than drive, Garden Cafe is a longtime favorite on Munger Park, in Old East Dallas. It was one of the first restaurants in the city with its own garden, a green oasis that makes the cafe’s adjacent patio extremely popular. After an eighteen-month pandemic hiatus, the cafe has reopened, with longtime favorites (like meat loaf with house red sauce) still on the menu. Some of the new, more ambitious dinner entrées suffer from heavy or too-spicy saucing, but the old standbys will be comforting to regulars, and the cozy bar scene will lure newcomers.
