Down in the original part of lower Greenville this new spot attracts the Lakewood crowd in droves. The dining room and two patios, inside and on the roof, have a distinctive Austin vibe, and the funky Asian decor doesn’t take itself seriously. The American-Chinese menu is interesting and creative enough, but the execution needs some work. The 3 Cup Kung Pao Chicken with chiles, jicama, peanuts, and herbs never really came together, although it was undeniably arty, with whole basil leaves and chiles tossed about on top. Next we tried the Crispy Shrimp Balls with tartar sauce. Described as “corn flake crusted,” they were doughy and heavy, and the shrimp inside was ground so finely it was undetectable. Getting the picture—finally—we turned to the creative cocktail menu and ordered a Lucky Cat: star anise–infused rum, ginger, and lime leaf–chile syrup with a fresh squeeze of lemon and lime. Ahhh. Redemption.
