We came for the dumplings. We left fans of the noodles. This cheery cafe is a great addition to the burgeoning Peavy Road food nexus that started with 20 Feet Seafood and Goodfriend Beer Garden. It’s a casual, counter-service spot, with turquoise chairs, laminated wood-topped tables, and a hip neighborhood following. A steaming bowl of braised beef noodle soup won us over with a peppery, star anise–spiced broth, excellent house-made noodles, and tender slabs of boneless braised short ribs; baby bok choy added a fresh element. Pan-fried pork dumplings were generously filled, but we wished the dumpling wrapper had been thinner. A better choice was an order of steamed sticky rice “dumplings,” which were orbs of savory minced chicken thigh enrobed in rice. Small cold salads are a bargain at just $3. The sesame-kale salad and smashed cucumbers in a sweet and tangy rice vinaigrette made good foils for our hot bites. Fresh brewed bubble tea was the only sweet offering when we visited, but dessert dumplings are expected to debut soon.
