J-Bar-M Barbecue
An interior that’s roomy and sleek, a spacious patio boasting a spectacular city view, plus binge-worthy barbecue? What’s not to like? Pitmaster Willow Villarreal and owner John Toomey (the M is for his late wife, Michelene) have added a destination joint to our thriving ’cue scene. Recent hits: hefty pork spareribs and brisket, a bit fatty but full of charred flavor. Excellent sides included spicy creamed corn, every kernel a sweet burst; nicely balanced mac and cheese; and crisp-tender green beans spiked with bacon. We’ll be coming back to try the sausage, turkey, and chopped beef sandwich, but thumbs up for a classic banana pudding and a chocolate ganache pie with an Oreo crust and whipped cream topping.
