From Marcus Davis of the Breakfast Klub, in Midtown, this upscale Discovery Green–area spot features reimagined Southern fare. On our recent visit, the service could not have been sweeter, and the lofty glass-walled room was buzzing with live jazz. We started with the addicting tempura-fried okra, perfectly executed with a light, crispy batter, and the cleverly prepared “meatloaf meatballs” coated in tomato sauce and served over potato puree (read meat loaf and mashed potatoes). Also terrific was chef Dawn Burrell’s rendition of mac and cheese: a warm hug of rigatoni, Gruyère, white Cheddar, panko bread crumbs, and towering Parmesan crisps. Alas, the shrimp and grits didn’t do it for us (salty grits, and the sauce lacked soul), but every other dish satisfied, as did the refreshing selection of South African wines. Don’t miss the signature pound cake of the week, brightened with fresh fruit.
