If calm and quiet are part of your idea of a fine meal, you won’t do better on the River Walk than the Spanish Colonial dining room at Las Canarias—spacious, filled with antiques, romantic and refined. The riverside tables are delightful too, if a bit busier. The dinner menu has recently undergone a major redo from top to bottom; it seems to be aiming for younger, trendier, and less formal. For example, while you can still order a New York strip or filet mignon, you can also get a puff pastry–topped chicken pie with a generous side of mashed potatoes (good but not as creamy as we anticipated). Among the standouts on the table: polenta topped with braised beef and a tomato chutney and seared striped bass with pea tendrils. This hotel restaurant is also a top destination for Sunday brunch, a buffet that includes an omelet bar, prime rib, eggs Benedict, and lots more (mimosas included in the set price too).
