Carefully recrafted in a sleek yet stately way, the former Green Pastures is now Mattie’s, a delightful update of that old-Austin icon. Inspired by the playful cocktail menu, we settled on sparkling wine and a porch-perfect bourbon iced tea. It’s a toss-up as to which we liked better: the extra-sharp and lightly spicy pimento cheese spread or the kale salad with bacon, brussels sprouts, and dates. A basmati rice bowl with chickpeas and roasted vegetables was fragrant with jasmine and curry, while a thick grilled burger with gooey Irish cheddar on house-made brioche was juicy and indulgent in all the right ways. But our favorite dish was the fried chicken. Delicately battered and served over a rich potato puree, it prompted visions of our great-grandmother’s kitchen. The best part: our check seemed far too small for the extravagant meal.
