Mess earned a name for itself serving waffles from a food truck. Last year, the owner took his niche product to a sturdier location: a tiny spot in a rapidly expanding shopping area across from Texas A&M. Long lines for the counter-service cuisine speak volumes about the food’s quality. There is a handful of other menu options (such as avocado toast and a burger loaded with mac and cheese), but Mess mainly does chicken and waffles, and does that dish well. We loved the subtle spiciness of the bird balanced by the sweet maple syrup. And the waffles are cooked just right: crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The patio area is a prime people-watching spot.
