Dining Guide

Mi Cocula

Hidden in the back of a nondescript shopping center, this family operation surprises with equal doses of elegant food, careful execution, and spare but chic interior design. Each visit impresses more than the last, and we’ve yet to find a disappointment. A shrimp cocktail with generous slices of avocado atop evokes the rich flavors of coastal Mexico. Sopes, just crisp at the edge but supple at the center, match deep, savory notes in carnitas and black bean with tart and fresh elements found in crumbled queso fresco, chopped cilantro, and tomatillo sauce. In the chile relleno, the freshly roasted poblano’s smoky essence shines, with its smooth white cheese balanced by the tart ranchero sauce.
