Dining Guide

The town whose main claim to fame is its vigilant Border Patrol checkpoint also has this surprisingly good cafe on a street paralleling Interstate 10. The somewhat tattered menu is as casually bilingual as the clientele. The painting of a bowl of caldo de res on the front of the building moved one of our group to order that first thing, which was plenty for lunch; sweet carrots and cabbage bobbed in a rich broth with a chunk of well-simmered beef and a couple of inches of corn on the cob. You personalize this soup by adding lime juice, the side of rice, and one of the selection of salsas. The more you eat, the better it tastes. Still in breakfast mode, another hungry traveler got the chile relleno omelet, which turned out to be just what it sounded like: a mild cheese-filled chile, battered and fried and folded inside a circle of seasoned eggs.
