Ostra is part of the combined restaurants of the across-the-river merger (La Mansión and Mokara, now both part of the Omni). It has to be one of the River Walk’s most beautiful restaurants, with its cobalt blue glass and gleaming raw bar stacked with oysters and shrimp, but we found the food a bit lacking in verve and vigor (not to mention focus—a bit of Asia, a bit of the Southwest, a bit of Maryland?). Nothing was awful, but the best dish on the table was the appetizer’s tiny crunches of calamari with shreds of cabbage and rice noodles and mirin dressing. A blackened redfish filet wasn’t really spicy enough, and it was a bit overcooked to boot. Our advice: stick to the oysters, appetizers, and beautiful cocktails.
