A dramatic backdrop—vast LEDs in bold colors and graphics on the walls that represent the twelve tribes of Israel—lends visual spectacle to this Galleria location (Houston now boasts four Peli Pelis). There are lots of meaty choices for carnivores, including the espetada, a skewer of seared beef chunks bathed in garlic butter. We devoured it and moved on to the steak frites, but, sadly, the meat was a little tough. A platter of curried spaghetti squash rounded things out with its mélange of brussels sprouts, portobello mushrooms, South African wild rice, and toasted coconut. Another good option for non-meat eaters is the carrot ginger soup with crème fraîche and spiced pumpkin seeds. Despite the family-friendly vibe, dinner can be pricey, so lunchtime is an affordable option for newbies who want to flirt with South African fare.
