With a lively bar, a vintage Ducati motorcycle on display, and artist-designed skateboard decks on the walls, Nick Badovinus’s quirky-cool pizzeria is a Highland Park hot spot. The big draw is thin-crusted Neapolitan pizza done right: light, crisp, and chewy, with crusty edges and just enough tasty char. High-quality toppings are modestly strewed on lightly sauced red or white pies. Pizzas like Jonny Slapps, a white pie with pea tendrils, guanciale, mozzarella, and runny-yolk eggs, and My Sharona, a spicy red pie with soppressata and calabrian chiles, celebrate a chef’s sensibility, but you can build your own too. Salads and big plates—like baked rigatoni and roasted chicken—round out the menu. We shared an excellent chopped salad, made with soppressata, tomatoes, pepperoncini, mozzarella, and olives. The Eggplant Parm Short Stack (listed under “Veg & Greens”) was an entrée-size tower of fried breaded eggplant, fresh mozzarella, and tomato slices on a puddle of light-textured, spiced tomato sauce. The selection of cocktails, spritzers, beers, and wines (some on tap!) impressed us as well. For dessert, we enjoyed locally sourced butter-pecan ice cream while watching three eighties-era movies at once, as a retro-rock sound track played. It was like high school, only cooler.
