Poke-Poke
Not all of us are grousing about the Californication of Austin, especially if it brings us deliciousness in the form of the raw fish salad known as poke. This Hawaiian food became a trend in Venice Beach, the original location of Poke-Poke, and Austin is the first outpost away from Muscle Beach. Across the street from the St. Edward’s campus, the space is spare, and the food is served in cardboard boats. You can pick from the standards—like a traditional ahi tuna with a bit of kick from sriracha—or customize your bowl. And although the Original “OG” Poke Bowl, with chunks of tuna and a copious amount of raw onion, is fresh and fun, we prefer the more mellow Shiso Salmon, with added avocado and the briny pop of masago.
