Dining Guide

Provisions rates as one of our city’s best and least pretentious restaurants; the long tables, convivial atmosphere, and congenial staff foster a sense of sharing, so three of us did just that (even with the rich, creamy asparagus vichyssoise that our server delivered in three small bowls). Highlights: rye berry pumpernickel with beer jelly and mild Point Reyes Bay Blue, a perfect melding of tastes and textures; an intensely flavored artichoke-prosciutto pizza spiced with Calabrian chiles; and a luxuriously smoky wild boar and olive terrine served with marjoram pesto and a baguette. One of our party, though, deemed the lowly Caesar wedge salad the winner: with each slice of the crisp romaine there tumbled to the cutting board a new arrangement of Parmesan, white anchovies, pickled lemon, charred capers, and bread crumbs.
