A downtown institution since 1972, this flashback diner is where blue- and white-collar workers sit side by side with sleeves rolled up to chew on comfort food and topics of the day. The daily lunch specials offer a variety of $9 items, and we rarely stray from the chicken-fried steak. The modest portion is always cut-with-a-fork tender, covered with white gravy, and comes with a drink, a selection from the daily rotation of vegetables, and cake or cobbler. We also enjoy the occasionally offered ham and lima beans and the goulash. You may wait a few minutes in line, but the service is always quick and friendly.
