When Resident Taqueria opened, in 2015, it quickly found critical acclaim and a devoted following in and beyond its East Dallas neighborhood. It’s a cool, minimalist little spot with a Manhattan vibe, but the friendliness is pure Texas. Founder and chef Andrew Marc Savoie’s inventive combinations, artfully presented on small flour or corn tortillas, surprise and delight. Carnivores might try pork belly or shoulder, short rib, pecan-smoked chicken, carne asada, picadillo, or chorizo. Pescatarians will love fried fish or shrimp tempura. Vegetarian options include cauliflower, mushrooms, falafel, and brussels sprouts. The dishes on our last visit, including queso, garlicky pinto beans, and Mexican fried rice, proved highly satisfying. Approach the house-made árbol chile salsa with caution, as a scoop may leave you gasping. Guac purists will note that Savoie’s tasty version includes one very New York ingredient: tiny green peas.
