Shelley’s Bakery Cafe
It had been too long since we’d visited with Shelley Brophy and her friendly crew at her ladies-who-lunch spot on a side street in downtown Nacogdoches. We almost gave in to our inclination to have dessert first, so drawn were we to the enticing pastries in the display case by the door. Instead, we were good Texans (after all, we were visiting the oldest town in our fair state) and dutifully devoured our lunches first, savoring the newly expanded menu. The Texas Cheesesteak panino served with jalapeño pimento cheese, juicy roast beef, and a balsamic onion marmalade was delicious, and the Cuban, with ham, pulled pork, spicy pickles, mustard, and Swiss, was a hit as well. We ate every bite, fully earning our tastings of tiny custard tarts.
