    Locals have been conditioned for many years that Smitty’s bbq has to be good even though it’s very mediocre. They think it has to be good since Smitty’s had been around so long. The only time you will see the truth is when out of towners pass through and try it for themselves and post honest reviews (they’re out there). I’ve personally eaten there and the food was nothing to brag about. The ribs are very undercooked and tough. You’ll never get “fall off the bone” ribs at Smitty’s. The ribs and brisket have no smoked flavor. In Texas, bbq lovers generally don’t use bbq sauce because well cooked meat needs no sauce but Smitty’s crew drowns the meat in sauce. It’s the only way the meat can have any flavor. The beans taste like canned beans with extra ingredients added, not home cooked pinto beans. You can read honest, accurate reviews at TripAdvisor. The writer of the Texas Monthly article was writing purely on emotion and the reputation of a place that was mainly from hanging around so long, not the food quality. You could call it a psychological review.
