Looking for live music, a playground, car wash, laundromat, craft beer, and burgers? The latter complete with grass-fed beef and bison from Pittsburgh, Texas; tomatoes from Marfa; and organic greens from a farm just south of town? Could such a place exist outside of heaven? Since 2001 the Cove has been a San Antonio family- and dog-friendly destination with “SOL” (sustainable, organic, local) guiding its culinary mission, which sounds a lot more highfalutin than it looks at the restaurant. The classic bacon cheeseburger gets high marks, as does the Blue Bison burger, topped with a beautiful array of greens and tomatoes. The Chilango comes with a roasted-chile-and-tamarind salsa and sliced avocado on top of the same excellent meat patty. Another option: tacos with grilled tilapia piled high with cilantro coleslaw and creamy poblano sauce. Sweet potato fries or classic fries are really all you’ll need on the side, but do leave room for one of the house-made desserts. There’s always a multi-generational crowd (and plenty of pups) jostling for picnic benches and jungle gym bars. Line up to order food at the counter (in the room next to the bar) and expect a bit of wait on busy afternoons and evenings.
