Part of the Texas-only Free-Range Concepts empire (so far Houston, Dallas, and SA), the General Public is an addendum to the Rustic’s “kitchen, backyard, bar, live music” universe and its also-adjacent Bowl & Barrel bowling alley. The GP is cozy, with a center bar, a slew of denim-shirted waiters and bartenders, and an assortment of burgers, oysters, and the like (reportedly a good brunch too). We found the options better and broader than your average barroom offerings and especially liked the crisp charred brussels sprouts, rosemary grilled shrimp served with cauliflower “grits” (a nice take on tradition with all the same gooey, creamy effect), and a tiny iron skillet of crunchy sriracha grilled okra. The GPB proved a burger worth its bun (and you can get a slider version for only $3 when happy hour starts, at 3). Service is so-so; orders are taken promptly but erratically served.
