This hip all-day cafe, coffeehouse, and natural wine bar near the Virgin Hotel is a welcome, affordable addition to the Design District. (Like the Austin original, the Meteor also offers chain lubes and other bike services, making it popular with cyclists.) Besides bacon, eggs, and pastries, the morning menu includes breakfast tacos, of which our favorite was the brisket version: spicy shredded beef, scrambled eggs, and sautéed red onion in a supple flour tortilla. We also liked the burger—a juicy Wagyu beef patty with smoked cheddar on a toasted artisan bun— which came with blessedly crisp OMG Fries. Also impressive are the pizzas with their chewy sourdough crusts; we liked the Maglia Rossa—a Margherita sibling—smeared with a chile-flecked marinara and dotted with mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, and slivered basil. The chicken Schwarma platter was our only disappointment, mostly because of the odd curried coleslaw base. Save room for the thick and chewy chocolate chip cookies. Final note: the thoughtful selection of natural wines is impressive.
