Twisted Root may have started in Deep Ellum, but Lubbockites have fallen for the casual spot and its gourmet burgers. In addition to traditional half-pound beef varieties, Twisted Root offers exotic meat like venison, rabbit, duck, boar, and kangaroo. Plus their Wagyu and bison are sourced from Texas ranches. Be warned, though, that the prices are reflective. A pickle bar and house-made condiments add zing; our favorite is the horseradish Dijon. People go crazy for the Treat-Yo-Self fries (topped with bacon and jalapeños), but the fried onion strings may be even better. Finish your meal off with the Fat Elvis shake: chocolate, banana, and peanut butter with bacon-peanut crumble. You’ll likely be too stuffed to dance, but there is also live music Friday and Saturday nights.
