Despite the sweets-oriented name, this charming cafe offers daily lunch specials, sandwiches, salads, and all-day breakfasts alongside the creamy pies, moist cakes, perfect pastries, and crunchy cookies that fill its bakery cases. Retired teacher and principal Joyce Williams opened the place in 2006, spurred by a “call to serve” her community. Word of mouth has fueled its success. Our sampling of the Thursday special found tender fried pork chops with rich gravy over rice with pineapple casserole and greens on the side, accompanied by cornbread (a regular at a neighboring table enthusiastically touted Monday’s smothered chicken). Biscuits and eggs in the morning give fast-food versions a thrashing, and the chicken-fried steak (served everyday) regularly takes top spot in local media polls.
