In this homey dining room, you’ll feel as if you’re eating at your auntie’s kitchen table. Here, former high school principal Joyce Williams keeps things moving in the kitchen and out front, and she’s beloved by her community. (On one of our recent visits, the front room shared its pastry case with bouquets brought from customers to celebrate her birthday.) Our chicken-fried steak, tender and bathed in cream gravy, met all CFS requirements, and sides come from a classic soul-food list: bacon-rich green beans, mashed potatoes, red beans, and silken fried cabbage—all good. And then there are the pies, by the slice or boxed whole, from coconut cream to lemon meringue to pecan.
