Zonk Burger

With this cheery burger joint in River East, Cowtown welcomes the latest in a rush of vegan choices. The star here is the Zonk Burger, a nubby patty comprising chickpeas, mushrooms, and millet, best when topped with grilled mushrooms and onions. A bit of heat awaits in the Southwest Black Bean Burger, a smoother-textured patty (alas, the fluffy white-bread bun threatens to overpower it). Vegan “wings,” made from silken tofu and the wheat gluten called seitan, are toothsome and addictive, thanks to a coating of mild buffalo sauce that finds its perfect match in the house-made dill-seasoned ranch. Don’t skip the skinny fries loaded with a tangle of caramelized onions, mushrooms, and Zonk’s special sauce.
