The rich heritage of San Angelo comes through as soon as you arrive in the city. As the Visual Arts Capital of Texas, San Angelo is filled with art and murals, many found in uncommon places. Paintbrush Alley pays tribute to the movie Giant that was filmed in West Texas and showcases the city’s ranching and oil and gas heritage. It is literally located in an alley behind Historic Concho Avenue, San Angelo’s first street. The Pop Art Museum is a few blocks away in a former bowling alley and is filled with pop art from local artists. It’s an Instagrammer’s dream, with vibrant murals and wonderful beams bringing in the sunshine and the starry night, depending on the time of day you visit this 24/7 open-air museum. The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is home to the Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art and plays host to the annual National Ceramic Competition from April to June and is now in its 24th year. The art theme continues along the Concho Riverwalk that runs through the middle of the city, where you can experience Art in Uncommon Places, including mosaic art under bridges and along pathways.
San Angelo, a city of 100,000, is a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of big city life and enjoy leisurely strolls along the river, watching wildlife, and taking time out to breathe. As the headquarters for this incredible rescue mission, San Angelo has embraced the efforts of the rescue operation, which has rescued more than 10,000 donkeys across the United States. For additional animal sightings, you can visit San Angelo State Park for wildlife viewing, including a bison herd and a longhorn herd. While you’re there, explore more than 55 miles of walking and equestrian trails.
