A Houston woman gave birth to two sets of identical twin boys in a matter of minutes this Valentine’s Day–a feat with odds of one in 70 million. Tressa and Manuel Montalvo did not use any fertility drugs, the Houston Chronicle reported, and were simply hoping for a new brother or sister for their two-year-old son Memphis. “I guess we just succeeded a little too much,” Tressa said.
By week ten of her pregnancy, Tressa, 36, knew she was having twins. But two weeks later, her doctor suspected a third heartbeat, CNN reported. A visit to a specialist finally revealed the full picture: the Montalvos would bring home four new family members.
“Home run!” cheered Manuel upon hearing the news, jumping up and down. Tressa said she would have “hit the floor” if she hadn’t been lying down on a table.
The first set of twins, Ace and Blaine, arrived at 8:51 a.m. at 3 pounds, 10 ounces and 3 pounds, 15 ounces, respectively. One minute later, Cash and Dylan were born, weighing 2 pounds, 15 ounces and 3 pounds, 6 ounces, respectively.
When picking names, the Montalvos stuck to the basics–an “A-B-C-D theme”–perhaps anticipating the impending chaos of some identical children. “We didn’t expect it. We were trying for just one and we were blessed with four,” Tressa told the Chronicle.
Despite their family’s abrupt increase in size, Manuel is still looking forward to a daughter. Tressa, however, is remaining practical for the moment. “OK, can we get through this first before I answer that?” she said.
Between this “extremely rare occurrence” and last June’s “mutant super egg,” it looks like the fertility gods have blessed Texas.
