Clint Eastwood’s recent career has seen the filmmaker take creative detours in unexpected places: His last four films were a musical, a biopic of J. Edgar Hoover, a supernatural thriller, and a sports drama. But the intense creative vision behind Eastwood’s darkest fare, like Unforgiven and Mystic River, seems to be back in his adaptation of Chris Kyle’s autobiography, American Sniper.

The trailer for Eastwood’s American Sniper is below, and it’s almost a mini-movie of its own, as Kyle’s character (played by Bradley Cooper), has to make the split-second decision of whether to pull the trigger. Intercut with all of this, we see the happier moments of Kyle’s life at home in Texas. As a two-minute glimpse at how the film seems to frame Kyle’s service, the trailer offers a challenging look at the role of a military sniper.

American Sniper hits theaters on December 25th.
