After enjoying huge popularity in a no-frills convenience store, Cowtown’s first Mexican café with ample vegan offerings found a wider audience by moving west to a shopping center space in Ridglea, just off Camp Bowie. A favorite from the classics menu, designed for carnivores, the barbacoa torta on fresh bolillo bread could have fed two of us, particularly with hand-cut fries served with muy picante ketchup. The birria quesadilla hit the spot, as did the elote, spiked with Valentina sauce. Best bets for vegans include jackfruit birria tacos, complete with melted vegan cheese; and nachos with vegan chorizo, a blanket of cashew queso, pico de gallo, pinto beans, vegan crema, guacamole and pickled red cabbage. Among crafty cocktails, the mezcal bramble with fresh lime and crème de cassis recently became our new favorite. We’ve found better service when seated at the bar.
