Just outside Fort Sam Houston’s south gates, this new (it opened in 2023) country-theme restaurant does a fine job on burgers, salads, nachos, and other San Antonio favorites. Featuring weathered wood, painted chairs, paneling, and large portions, it’s staffed by friendly Dortman family members, longtime restaurateurs who formerly ran La Tuna Grill in near-downtown Southtown. We couldn’t finish the large bowl of white bean chili —but that just made lunch the next day a given! The casual setting and order-at-the counter routine kept everybody’s orders coming out at a nice clip. Burgers (notably the Black and Bleu) and fries are popular, but the menu goes beyond, with chicken-fried steak, shrimp po-boys, and ribeye sandwiches at both lunch and dinner.
