Preston Hollow’s newest Tex-Mex comes from the folks who brought you TJ’s Seafood, just across the way at Preston Royal. Escondido is bright, pretty and pleasant, though the playlist—Spanish covers of pop artists like the Beatles or Simon & Garfunkel—was a bit loud. We liked El Trio, an appetizer sampler of perfect guacamole, velvety queso, and a very spicy cilantro ranch dip. Best entrees: grilled salmon with elote and green chile salsa, and chicken enchiladas in a light tomatillo sauce, though the rice and frijoles refritos were merely okay, not stellar. The kitchen’s still working out bumps: rubbery shrimp a la plancha, wrapped with slaw in flour tortillas, proved disappointing, as was oversalted beef in the carne asada with papas bravas. But the lovely strawberry cuatro leches cake, along with terrific margaritas and welcoming service, sent everyone home in a good mood.
