Cocktail guru Alba Huerta’s venerable and still bustling Washington Ave watering hole has always offered charcuterie and oysters on the half shell. But chef Calvin Miller recently tweaked the food menu in an attempt to level up to the award-winning cocktails. The results are hit-and-miss. Southern classics like pulled pork sliders and maque choux, a savory mix of fresh corn and onions, snappy andouille sausage, and mustard cream sauce, got two thumbs up. Less successful were globally influenced dishes, like the shawarma-spiced beef carpaccio with cold pita bread and the aguachile, which starred large but unseasoned shrimp (and zero citrus). No complaints, though, with a salad of roasted brussels sprouts with feta, pecans, bacon, and sweet balsamic. To drink, greatness prevails in the pretty and aptly named Julep Mint Julep.
