The ever-changing menu here is diverse and adventurous, all of it informed by chef Sue Kim’s culinary experiences in Japan, Thailand, New Zealand, and her home country of South Korea. We started with sublime smoked duck, thinly sliced with a garnish of sour cherries and pickled long beans—a perfect balance of flavors. Roasted root vegetables were the surprise “best of table” entry, with a variety of carrots, sweet potato, and beets in a romesco sauce rich with almonds and walnuts. Named for the avian harbinger of good luck, the Magpie is housed at the Hackberry Market and boasts a welcoming small dining room and a big patio.
