Well-known for its dinner menu of premium seafood, sushi, and steaks, Up Scale offers a classy Sunday brunch with limited but well-curated items like gnocchi carbonara and Benedicts with lobster. Deviled eggs with smoked trout roe was rather unremarkable, but the similarly priced tower of bananas Foster French toast with pecans, Chantilly cream, and rum maple syrup was a triumph of texture and taste with an unexpected hint of orange. Our share-a-bite favorite was the French omelet with tiny but tasty fried oysters, loaded with roughly chopped bacon, and topped with beurre blanc. Brunch libations include a selection of breakfast martinis (GINger Screwdriver, anyone?), sparkling wines, and champagne. Oddly enough, the coffee was served in a small, clear glass cup rather like a punch cup, with no saucer, but it was a good brew. Polished, unobtrusive service, deco-inspired interior with soft lights, cool jazz, rounded peach and rose banquettes, impressive bar—upscale indeed. Street parking can be a challenge but there is a $10 valet parking service offered at the door.
