For the Family

LORDS OF THE RINGS Remarkably, you’ll be able to witness a ringmaster get eaten by a lion this month. M. C. Bot, a mechanical master of ceremonies, will meet his fate via mechanical lion Max Fang in the Space Center Houston’s latest exhibit, “Robot Circus,” which features a choreographed catastrophic performance by Clown Bots, B.L.U. and R.E.D.D., and Roboticus, a saw-wielding giant. While NASA looks to the fantastical future, the Austin Museum of Art-Downtown will reflect on past circuses with some ninety paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, and videos by American artists such as George Bellows, Alexander Calder, and Diane Arbus in an exhibit titled “The Circus in Twentieth-Century American Art: Images From the World Between.” But if it is live action you crave, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth will tour through San Antonio, College Station, Houston, and Dallas, bringing with it a spectacle of contortionists, flying acts, and Carnaval-style Brazilian dancers. We expect Ringling’s singing and dancing ringmaster, Johnathan Lee Iverson, will emerge unscathed.
