Tired of breakfast tacos? Aster, which sits in an old home across the street from the Presidio County Courthouse, is a bakery first—and everything flows from that, whether it’s breakfast or lunch. From the oven out back come bagels, scones, sourdough bread, brioche, and oatmeal cookies. Order your eggs Benedict with smoked salmon or try the warm steel-cut oatmeal with fresh fruit and maple syrup. Or have pancakes or Belgian waffles—the list goes on. Midday, Aster turns out hamburgers, BLTs, and chicken salad sandwiches. The salads are fresh and the daily specials (like the potato jalapeño soup) imaginative. With its crowded kitchen and cozy rooms, Aster is charmingly laissez-faire about Marfa’s world-wide reputation: On the wall, beside photos of some of what makes Marfa special, like sunsets and javelinas, are posters made from infamous Yelp comments on the city, like, “The entire town needs to get over themselves,” and “Marfa—If you like being treated poorly then this is the place for you!” You won’t find that at Aster: We liked the service, loved the food.
