A second edition of Betelgeuse Betelgeuse has opened on Montrose, and this quirky, funky, space-themed cocktail bar/pizza hangout, which features irresistible “iron-clad” crunchy-edged Detroit-style pies, has become dear to our heart. Huge murals of skeletal horses and masked mannequins lead you to the door, while inside, extraterrestrials and Day of the Dead paraphernalia battle it out. TV sports shows play but are muted. The focus is the bar with its wildly named cocktails. We took the bartender’s recommendation on a tequila-laden watermelon Fresca (really), an ROB Zombie, and a Gravedigger. And then we sat back and appreciated the diversity of Montrose as we awaited our sizzling pie. The Alpha Centauri, with Mandola Italian sausage, sautéed peppers, and Calabrian chile oil stood out, as did the Ursa Major—simple and swoon-inducing with Roma tomatoes, basil, and garlic. These put us into orbit, and then the Buffalo hot wings pushed us higher, as did the strange but satisfying fried spaghetti balls (hushpuppy-ish) stuffed with molten mozzarella and a tomato vodka sauce. We will blast off for this Betelgeuse star again very soon.
