Like its namesake the woodpecker, this family favorite is boisterous, with a hearty menu that taps into Mexican favorites, Tex-Mex traditions, and lighter fare (for those who have more willpower than we do). From breakfast to burgers, tacos to tostadas, and everything in between, there’s something substantial for everyone. We often start with queso fundido, a steaming bowl of melted Oaxaca cheese sprinkled with chorizo, which in turn calls for an order of flour or corn tortillas. Then it’s on to crispy and tender crusted sweetbreads (mollejas), succulent golden pillows surrounded by slivers of avocado, grilled white onion, charro beans, and Spanish-style rice. There’s a broad range of carne asada combo plates, but we must not finish without a word about the popular Mexican Classics portion of the menu and our must-have: Flautas Aztecas. These are crisp, tightly rolled tacos, simply dressed with guacamole and Mexican crema agria and festooned with bright yellow cheese. The cumin-seasoned chicken filling regularly induces rapture. Be advised that portions here are beyond ample, but take-away cartons are available in abundance.
