North of the city proper, right where the cotton fields pick up, you’ll find the Shack, with its dirt parking lot and rustic charm. You’ll also find some of the best barbecue in the city. We were crazy about our pork ribs, licking our fingers and sucking everything off the bone—not that it was difficult with meat so tender. The brisket, accompanied by their spicy sauce, was divine. The loaded potato salad is also a must. All of the meats, sauces, and sides are made in-house daily, and when they sell out, they close. But if you miss it (like we did the first time), you can drink your troubles away in their Bootlegger’s Lounge, which is open till midnight.
