Open a bit more than a year, this cheery yellow cafe is gaining a reputation beyond its Near Northwest neighborhood. From morning to night, a couple of steamy open kitchens (sharing space with a check-cashing and money-transfer booth) send out northern Mexican specialties, like plancha-pressed tortas filled with assorted meats, cheeses, salsas, beans, and all kinds of combos. You’ll spot the slowly turning trompo in the kitchen, from which slivers of meat make their way to sturdy bread the size of flattened softballs or corn or flour tortillas. Expect norteño music, fútbol on TV, babies, families, and a general festive atmosphere for dinner and lunch (breakfast is a bit more sedate).
