While certainly not devoid of college kids, this institution has, for decades, catered to local residents. As opposed to the white-tablecloth atmosphere of other steakhouses, the Tavern goes for hunting trophies, football paraphernalia, and beer signs. And customers find the kind of options that might have been served in their grandmothers’ kitchens—fried chicken breasts, pork chops, macaroni and cheese—without flourishes or creative twists. We dined well on the trademark chicken-fried steak with sides of mashed potatoes and green beans, and a friend enjoyed fried catfish. Both tasted like home.
