Early Voting: Day Twelve (final numbers)

I am going to use this format to update daily the number of early votes cast in the fifteen counties with the most registered voters, ranked by the Secretary of State in the order of most to least registered voters. I am also going to include the numbers for the same day (in this case, the twelfth and final day; Friday, October 31 2was the last day for early voting). I will also post the numbers for the twelfth day of early voting in 2004. Please note: The sum of the daily totals does not match the cumulative totals. This is because the daily totals represent in-person voters only. The Secretary of State’s office does not provide daily totals for mail-in votes. The figure for “cumulative votes cast” does include mail-in ballots. Figures for Cameron County are for 2008 only. Cameron County did not rank among the top fifteen counties in registered voters in 2004.

Paul- In your analysis of State House races you have not mentioned Dist 41 between Veronica Gonzalez and Javier Villalobos. As you know, Republicans designed this district several years ago to lean GOP but this is the first candidate they have fielded. Any sign that there may be a surprise upset in this race, especially with lackluster turnout in Hidalgo County. Thanks.

I know that this is a Republican leaning district. I suppose it is a dark horse swing district, but I don’t think Villalobos has done much to this point. The low level of enthusiasm could be a problem for the Democrats.

    Paul,

Do not consider early vote totals in S. TX and EP to be any indication of voter enthusiasm. In my former life as a political consultant operating primarily in areas of the state with high Hispanic populations it was always interesting to note in election after election that Hispanic voters do not vote early (for the most part). Check it out. The data should not be difficult to obtain.

20,000 people have voted in Lubbock County.
Not sure why it’s not in the Top 15 of counties–even based on registered voters.

It may be more accurate to say that the South Texas/Border counties are not as enthusiastic as the state’s major metro areas, but I believe their early vote participation is up significantly over 2004.

    Tom:

This is not our year in D41. I have been following the PAC’s polling in D41, D32, and D34. We had some real hope in all these districts, but only D34 is performing anywhere near those hopes, and it looks like we’re falling short in D34, too.

    D 41 is Gonzales – Villalobos
    D 32 is Garcia – Hunter
    D 34 is Herrero – Scott

I would call all these races as Anonymous does. I’ve been a skeptic about Garcia, but I’m coming around. This is one of those races that, if the Republicans, lose, Craddick has to answer for it. He recruited the candidate in what should have been a locked-up district for Republicans. I don’t think Herrero is home free yet; they are really hammering him on TV. I don’t know whether Craddick recruited Scott. She may be more of a TLR play.

I think Paul and Anonymous at 8:30 am are ultimately correct about outcome of the District 41 race between Veronica Gonzalez and Javier Villalobos. Despite the district’s slant, Gonzalez has worked hard to keep her name and face out in front; as a result many people like her.

The Hidalgo County GOP, unfortunately, cannot catch a break. It would have been interesting had he run 6 years ago when the district was redesigned and Gonzalez did not have the advantage of incumbancy.

My wife Connie Scott was not recruited by anyone, we are big TLR people but we chose this race on our own, without consulting anyone. We decided that Herrero was such a sorry candidate that someone needed to run against him. That is the long and short of it.

this comment has nothing to do with the post but -

why am i being asked to register for visiting Texas Monthly 3 times? I can’t access anything anywhere on the website, and I don’t want to give up my personal information. I had to get on a different computer to load this site. This has got to be one of the biggest disincentives to revisit a site that i’ve encountered.

What I’m hearing is the GOP is scared to death about the Democrats coming out to early vote in the early vote locations in GOP leaning northern dallas county. I live in HD102 and I would guess it’s about even right now. Not good for Goolsby. He doesn’t have a voter fraud story to save him this time. Vaught is in the drivers seat in 107 from what I can gather. HD112 leans Button but it will be closer than expected.
