Spring Creek Village, on Belt Line in the northern reaches of Dallas, might seem an unlikely location for an East African cafe. But if you’ve never before tasted Eritrean food, this unpretentious eatery is a great place to start. Try sharing a platter of tibsi: bite-size bits of your choice of beef, lamb, chicken, or fish, marinated and sautéed with onion, garlic, and peppers. These flavorful dishes normally have extra spices mixed in, but you can ask for the spice to be served on the side if you prefer less heat. Tibsi is eaten without utensils, so we enjoyed using small pieces of thin, soft, spongy injera, a traditional bread, to pick up our bits of beef and lamb. Also on the menu: salads, sandwiches, vegetables, fried chicken, and fish (and pasta, a remnant of the country’s Italian-colonial past).
