Excursions to Baytown, Texas, offer many exciting options, from a family-friendly GeoTour to a night at the theater. Come relax on the water or take a stroll along the new sculpture trail! Baytown is situated in the Gulf Coast region of Texas just east of Houston and north of Galveston, and is perfectly situated for visitors while on business or exploring with family.

Seize the Outdoors!

Baytown, known for its rich saltwater and fresh water fishing, is nestled among 4 different saltwater bays that feed into Galveston Bay. A variety of fishing guides and charters launch out of Baytown daily, including the famous Thompson’s Bait Camp, but Baytown has multiple places to wet a hook via land, boat, or kayak!

Located on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, the Baytown Nature Center is a 500-acre peninsula surrounded by three bays and home to more than 350 species of birds. The Baytown Nature Center features picnic shelters, fishing piers, pavilions and overlooks, a butterfly garden, and a children’s nature discovery area. This location is a special place for avid and novice birders to take in the many species of birds that reside or migrate through the area.

An off-the-beaten-path opportunity is the Bird Island Boat Tour with Terry’s Guide Service. April through June, birders flock to the area to take this boat tour. Bird Island is an official migratory nesting sight and only accessible by boat. Captain Terry’s Bird Island Boat Tour is 2 hours long and circles the whole island for an incredible birding experience. Birders will see thousands of birds on the shores, nesting in the trees, and feeding in the waters surrounding the island. The island has become a bird oasis and the result is visually stunning for birders and photographers.

The ever-popular and family-friendly “Family, History, Nature Together GeoTour” (GT7A) gives visitors a scavenger hunt style tour of Baytown’s top attractions, unique venues, and history while earning prizes and having fun. Visitors get the chance to piece together a puzzle through codes and earn “swag” at the end of the journey! Participants can pick up their GeoTour passport at the Baytown Visitor Center, the tourism kiosk in the Baytown Buc-ee’s, or print a passport online at visitbaytown.com/geocaching

We bring the summer cool down with fun events happening at Baytown’s waterpark, Pirates Bay! This resort-style park has a lazy river, various slide towers, wave pool, FlowRider, and the first NinjaCross in North America, as well as Pirate Parties and Dive-in Movies all summer long.

The Baytown Sculpture Trail is a newly added exhibit of original outdoor sculptures displayed year-round in Baytown’s Downtown Arts District. The Sculpture Trail is a mix of 25 unique statues, featuring artists from across the country and Canada. Visitors can take a 3-block, self-guided tour of this free, outdoor display. The exhibit features life-like imagery, abstract art pieces, and a variety of mediums from welded metal to carved wood. Visitors will want to return each year to see the sculptures as the exhibit changes each March.

Seize the Cuisine!

Baytown features more than 100 dining options, but Baytown definitely puts a twist on Tex-Mex because being located in Texas means that amazing Tex-Mex is a must. A popular visitor pick is El Toro Mexican Restaurant, which has three locations in Baytown. Their largest location features live music on the weekends, a large meeting room for parties, and a bar serving some of the best margaritas in the Houston area. Try sampling tacos by taking our Taqueria Tour, which features many of Baytown’s authentic taquerias that serve up scrumptious street tacos! When wondering through the Downtown Arts District, stop in for a Mexican sweet treat at Sabor of Mexico. Sabor features real fruit popsicles, an array of Mexican ice cream flavors, and other traditional treats like banana splits! Love sushi? Try out Wazabi Sushi Bar. This cool eatery is where a laid-back atmosphere meets some of the best sushi in the area.  You might even get a dish featuring fire glowing on the plate.
