A&M-Kingsville Athletic Director Steps Down Over Up-Skirting Scandal

The athletic director for Texas A&M University-Kingsville was arrested last week for allegedly pointing a camera up a teenage girl’s skirt in a San Antonio Walmart.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported that Brian DeAngelis, 39, was charged with improper photography after a police officer found video a of woman’s undergarments on his phone.

Sandy Gutierrez, the senior public information officer with the San Antonio Police Department, told the Caller-Times that the girl’s mother confronted DeAngelis after she noticed him putting his leg under her daughter’s dress, at which point he fled the store.

KRIS-TV reported that DeAngelis was running from the store when he was stopped by a police officer who was responding to an unrelated call. The girl’s mother pursued DeAngelis and approached the officer. She claimed that DeAngelis had taken pictures up her daughter’s dress with a cell phone that he had taped to his shoe.

DeAngelis said he was only tying his shoe and offered his cellphone to the officer. The officer found several blurry pictures taken inside a grocery store and video from inside the Walmart. Those images are said to include shots of the undergarments of the fourteen-year-old and other women.

DeAngelis was later released on a $5,000 bond.

According to the South Texan in Kingsville, DeAngelis was placed on administrative leave by the university on September 18.

Scott Gines, the university’s former athletic director and vice president for institutional advancement, told the South Texan that DeAngelis contacted him to request a meeting about his arrest. “He shared with me the general events of his Sunday night that he had been arrested on a felony charge of improper photography,” Gines said. DeAngelis submitted his written resignation to the university September 19.
