This was passed along to me by a Democratic operative with contacts in Washington. I cannot vouch for its veracity. All I can vouch for is that I got a phone call. The call began, “Before you praise Karl Rove, you need to know that ….” I report this as spin, not as fact. I’m in no better position to judge the truth or falsity of this report than anybody else.
Here is the spin: Rove did not leave of his own accord. He was pushed out over fears that when Congress reconvenes in September, he will become enmeshed in the battle over executive privilege and the U.S. Attorneys investigation. The Ds are looking for evidence of obstruction of justice.
I don’t know what the law says. If in fact the White House urged U.S. attorneys to prosecute voter fraud cases, I do not know whether this violates any law. Nor do I know whether urging the firing of U.S. attorneys violates any law. I rather doubt that it does. U.S. Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president. How can it be a crime to fire them?
