We need to teach children to work hard and have a positive attitude, to say, “My situation may not be good, but I can change that.” At our school I point them to the examples of people like George Washington Carver. He didn’t say, “I was a slave and didn’t have a chance.” My message to the kids here comes from him: “Start where you are, use what you have, make something of it, and never be satisfied.” I’m standing on Carver’s shoulders. I tell the kids, “You stand on my shoulders.”
Robinson, a former NBA All-Star with the San Antonio Spurs, started the Carver Academy in 2001, a pre-K through sixth grade school in San Antonio.
